Portable ECG Monitor by CONTEC
High blood pressure and clogged arteries run in our family. Actually, just a few weeks prior to me purchasing the portable ECG Monitor by CONTEC, my mother had multiple bypass surgery. Since her surgery, I’ve been paying more attention to my health recognizing that I could be a walking time bomb just as she was. This realization and an Amazon ad are what prompted me to look into purchasing an ECG machine. I hoped to find one that was medically recognized, not big and bulky, and provided accurate results. It also had to be user friendly as I am not technologically savvy.
While there were a few different brands and models on the market, after Googling the manufacturer CONTEC, I opted to go with them based on their strong presence within the medical field, number of patents and awards, size of the company and the fact that they have a business office here in the US seated in Chicago. Also, it is obvious that they intend to be around for the long haul as they’ve been in business since 1996 and continue to thrive hitting the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in August of 2020. The company touts itself as a world-class enterprise and based on the functionality and performance of the portable ECG Monitor, I think they’re right.
This company stands loud and proud over its product. I say this because shortly after purchasing the ECG, I received an email from them sharing a few tips for set up and use of the apparatus, as well as an invitation to contact them if I had any questions. I thought that was a nice touch.
My first impression of this transmitter/receiver was that it looked like a Dictaphone… rectangular shape, LCD screen about 1.5” x 1/5”, and compact, fitting in my hand. It is actually lighter than a Dictaphone weighing only 60 grams. The beauty of this machine is that there are no parts other than a single, compact sized monitor to be concerned with… no sticky leads. Maintaining two points of constant contact with electrodes on both sides of the unit, until the timer reaches zero, is all it takes to get a reading. Depending on user preference, the testing time can be changed from 10 – 15 to 30 seconds. I haven’t read anything that discusses the difference between the durations.
It is importatnt to remember that in order to achieve accurate results, simultaneous contact of the probes (touching both sides of the unit) is necessary for good cross feed and accurate results. Testing is not difficult, painful or inconvenient in any way and is so inconspicuous that one could test in the middle of Rockefeller Square on New Year’s Eve and go unnoticed. Everything you need to know while testing is visible in real-time, on the LCD screen, … date, heart rhythm graph, beats per minute and battery life. It also has a timer to countdown the seconds until test completion. I believe one of the best features of the unit is that it stores test results on a smart phone device. By filing away historical results, including the graph of heart beats and whether or not abnormalities were detected, a doctor will have vital information to aid in the formulation of a diagnosis and treatment plan should it ever become necessary.
I was able to test the ECG right out of the box as it arrived fully charged. According to information on the box, this unit can perform 500 tests before needing a recharge. It’s too early for me to know the accuracy of the “500 uses” theory, but I’ve tested myself and family members probably over 50 times, and the battery lifeline hasn’t moved from full. The unit also has an auto shut off feature that powers it down after one minute on non-use, which helps to save battery life.
Downloading the app for tracking results was super easy. All I had to do was access the barcode on the box. From there it was a guided process. I was able to set my language choice and pick a test duration from the options provided. The instruction pamphlet includes thorough guidance and tables that can be saved for future reference… tables such as Trouble Shooting and Solution table, Explanation of Symbols table and Battery Life table. There are pictures and diagrams to help guide you through the setup and learning process. If you really want to delve into learning about the ECG monitor, you might consider purchasing an EKG / ECG (Quick Study Academic) Pamphlet for more detailed understanding of the unit and its references. Amazon sells them.
It is comforting to know that I can self-monitor with a medical grade ECG machine and store and track the results using my cell phone, because based on my family history, I know that I am prone to coronary heart disease. That knowledge along with the fact that I’m not getting any younger, makes me owning the ECG device a smart move. This thing is a great assist to early prevention from cardiovascular disease and can be responsible for reducing many other health risks.
NOTE: I gave it 5 stars for accuracy because when I compared the detected beats per minute results from the ECG machine against the old-fashioned finger probe, and the results were within a beat or two of each other.

Nice small unit but not IOS compatible as advertised. If you have windows you’ll probably like it.
After I posted this the company contacted me and they apparently now have made the software available for iOS users. It does seem like a very nice easy to use unit. The only drawback is it’s only one lead.

The detailed ECG report generated after use is not only easy to understand, but also recognized by several professional doctors. The data it generates can be easily sent to doctors via cell phone. It helps me to better communicate with my doctor and develop a personalized health management plan

Works really well. Much easier than taking my pulse manually

Of particular note is the fact that this EKG monitor is perfectly compatible with iOS, allowing me to view the analysis results directly on my iPhone, which greatly enhances the ease of use. And the data was also approved by my doctor. I am very happy I found this perfect product.
