I found this stepper to be fairly quiet and stable with a smooth movement. There is some play when pressure switches to the other foot, which causes a small noise. It also bottoms out with a dull thud when the step hits the base but, once you get used to it, you can adjust your movement so you reverse direction before it bottoms out. The counter works fine. The only set-up required is attaching the knob that enables you to adjust the vertical distance of your step.
The steps are 10.5″ long and I found that the heel of my size 9.5 running shoes hung over the back edge of the step–not by enough to cause stability issues but you could have a problem if you have large feet, in which case I would advise measuring your shoes before ordering. Also note that the instructions specify a 100 kg (220 lbs.) user weight limit whereas the product description says 300 lbs. I have no idea which weight limit is correct, but you might want to be aware of this if your weight is in the 220-300 lb. range.
Overall, the quality isn’t bad. However, if you are used to high-quality exercise equipment, like I am, you’re unlikely to be impressed by the quality.
I use this for a minute or two during occasional breaks from sitting and it’s OK for that. I can’t really see using this for 30 minutes every day, as the product description suggests, both because using it is not particularly exciting (even if watching TV) and I’m not sure how much of a workout you would get. For that much use, I think I would choose one of the many inexpensive elliptical trainers, which have a smoother and quieter movement and allow you to work your arms more conveniently. Of course, they are more expensive and take up more space. There are lots of similar steppers on the market, so you might want to compare several before making a purchase decision.
