Update: I was contacted by Precor almost immediately after posting this review by a national rep. He explained to me they had been trying to diagnose this problem for awhile, and that it was most likely a faulty parts problem. He then told me he would be sending me a new machine. So far (after approx. a month of use) the machine seems to be working as designed and feels like a tighter build. I haven’t heard any clunking noises. I’m a fairly big guy, and interval train with the machine at a variety of ramp heights and resistance intensities. So if there is a problem to be revealed, I believe I’ll find it. I was impressed with the company’s response, honest and forthright, and am pleased that they acted so quickly. At this price point, buying new, you really enter into a 10-year plus relationship with the company you choose to purchase a piece of equipment like this from. And I chose Precor because of their highly regarded reputation, which after this experience seems to be well-founded. I would rate their customer service as five-stars, which currently raises my review to three-stars (one star being for the machine I used for over a year that drove me crazy). After a while longer using the machine, if I’m convinced the problem is fixed, I will update again. I’m hopeful I’ve finally got the machine I originally thought I purchased, but want some more time with it to make sure.
Original review: Own one. Everyone will tell you that it’s the Cadillac of ellipticals. I heartily disagree. It’s been one problem after another with this machine. The main problem is noise. It has a loud clunk that is infuriating. I’ve tried two different repair companies (at least five different repair visits), spoken to the dealer, and spoken to reps at Precor. It’s still there and now there is new noise where pedal is clicking on because adhesive is coming off inside the pedal. I’m supremely disappointed. Precor will continue to try to fix it for 10 years, however fix implies they made a good one to begin with. Sadly they did not.

I wouldn’t buy again if I had the opportunity. I’ve had this for one month and there was metal on metal noise right out of the box. Precor sent a tech and they stopped that noise. A day or two later a new banging sound started. They sent the same tech. He took apart the entire machine (probably shouldn’t have done that) and left significant damages to all of the plastic parts. In addition to the plastic damage he caused, he couldn’t fix it and now caused a scraping noise along with a knocking sound. Precor is now sending one of their techs to assess their 3rd party tech damage and to replace all damaged parts. I bought this from gronk fitness in March 2024 and precor told me this machine was built in 2021 when I called. So these are old machines and who knows what has happened to them in storage. I wish I never bought this.

The EFX is a great elliptical at a great price. It’s compact enough to fit a smaller gym space but has a solid commercial feel and build quality. I love the variability of the different positions and settings. All around a great cardio machine!
